Apprenticeship pilot programme success sparks new teenagers jobs scheme at LJMU [Liverpool Echo (England)]

(Liverpool Echo (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LIVERPOOL John Moores University (LJMU) has appointed five apprentices in a scheme to provide job opportunities for young people not in education, employment or training.

The appointments follow the success of last year's pilot programme which saw six young people securing jobs or university places after completing their 12-month apprenticeships at the university.

LJMU's apprenticeship scheme is part-funded by Liverpool Council. Over the next 12 months, the five new apprentices, aged 16 and 17, will work in a variety of roles across the university. They will also attend college one day a week, where they will complete NVQs.

Cllr Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Employment and Skills, said: "It is a great scheme which is giving our young people the opportunity to gain skills and training with a quality employer." Julie Bertolini, LJMU finance director and deputy chief executive, added: "LJMU recognises it has a responsibility to raise the aspirations and provide opportunities for all young people in Merseyside."
