Applicants for city's veterans position sought

FITCHBURG, Dec 12, 2009 (Sentinel and Enterprise - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The committee tasked with searching for a new veterans agent to replace Theryn "T.J." Blauser, who retired in November, has decided to post the position externally, after reviewing applications submitted by two city employees.

"We didn't feel that only two applicants would do justice to the position, which helps so many people within the city," said Joseph Byrne, chairman of the search committee.

Byrne said the decision to post the job externally was unanimous among the committee, which includes state Rep. Stephen DiNatale, D-Fitchburg, and Ward 2 City Councilor Norman Boisvert.

Internal applicants included acting Veterans Agent Ken Jones, and a member of Fitchburg Police Department, Byrne said.

Jones was appointed Acting Veterans Agent by Mayor Lisa Wong in November. Jones was previously Wong's assistant.

Byrne said the committee asked Wong to open up the job to outside candidates this week, and that she agreed to do so.

Byrne said the position is open to combat veterans with an associates degree, and at least five years of managerial experience. Jones and the other internal applicant are still in the running for the job, Byrne said.

"We haven't closed it. Those two are still on file," said Byrne.

The search committee will meet next in January.
