Many thousands killed by US's Korean ally in 1950

DAEJEON, South Korea _ Grave by mass grave, South Korea is unearthing the skeletons and buried truths of a coldblooded slaughter from the Korean War, when this nation's U.S.-backed regime killed untold thousands of leftists and hapless peasants in a summer of terror in 1950. With U.S. military officers sometimes present, and as North Korean invaders pushed down the peninsula, an estimated 100,000 or more were executed, many without facing charges or trial, says a key member of a government commission investigating the bloodbath, hidden from history for a half-century. Fists a-flurry: Nigeria's distinctive boxing style

SOKOTO, Nigeria _ Lawali Danjega is six feet of shirtless sinew, tense muscle and jangled nerves as he readies himself for his bout, frantically wrapping and rewrapping a length of rope around his fist. The 20-year-old butcher is a contender in a Nigerian brand of boxing where teeth fly and losers are knocked senseless, all for a purse of a few hundred dollars _ a handsome sum in an impoverished society. Jewish-American family builds school and mosque in Cambodian village

TRAMOUNG CHRUM, Cambodia _ When residents of this poor, Cambodian village need something built, they call on the Lightmans. The Jewish-American family's latest gift: a mosque. "We never had such a beautiful mosque," said 81-year-old Leb Sen, a toothless, village elder. Alan Lightman, a humanities professor in Massachusetts, said building the mosque was not part of his family's original plan to help this Cambodian village, but they decided to go along with the villagers wish for a place to worship. Robot digger set for Sunday landing on Mars

LOS ANGELES _ Like a miner prospecting for gold, NASA's latest robot to Mars is hoping to hit pay dirt when it lands near the red planet's north pole later this month. The three-legged Phoenix Mars, armed with a backhoe, will dig into the Martian soil, looking for a reservoir of ice believed to lurk beneath. BC-NA-FEA-GEN--US-Phoenix Mars. By Alicia Chang. Berkshire's No. 2 man helps from the background

PASADENA, California _ The two men who run Berkshire Hathaway Inc. have an arrangement: Warren Buffett is the face of the company and Charlie Munger stays mainly in the shadows. That works well for the two billionaires, who together have developed one of the most successful investment records ever. But while Munger downplays his own contributions _ he is known for repeating "I have nothing to add" after Buffett's expansive comments at the Berkshire shareholder meetings _ his role is key to much of the company's success. Avatars that think? Artificial intelligence researchers turn to 'Second Life'

TROY, New York _ "Second Life." A steel-gray robot with lanky limbs and linebacker shoulders, he looks like a typical avatar in this popular virtual world. But Edd is different. His actions are animated not by a person at a keyboard but by a computer. Edd is a creation of artificial intelligence researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, who endowed him with a limited ability to converse and reason. It turns out "Second Life" is more than a place where pixelated avatars chat, interact and fly about. It's also a frontier in "AI" research _ a controllable environment where's it's easier to test intelligent creations. BC-NA-FEA-TEC--US-Smart Avatars. By Michael Hill. AP Photos NYMG203-205.

AOL seeks growth, ad dollars in shift from mass site to niches

NEW YORK _ A company rooted in bringing the Internet to the masses, AOL is shifting its focus toward serving niche audiences with the launch of dozens of specialty Web sites. The latest _ ParentDish for parents, The Boot for country music and The Boom Box for hip hop and R&B _ were formally launching Friday. Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, branching out in hopes of doing a better job attracting crucial advertising revenue to offset its rapidly declining Internet access business, calls the niche sites "passion points." American boy with worldly background starts college a bit early _ at 8

DOWNEY, California _ With the end of another school year nearing, college sophomore Moshe Kai Cavalin is cramming for final exams in classes such as advanced mathematics, foreign languages and music. But Cavalin is only 10 years old. And at 4-foot-7 (138 centimeters), his shoes don't quite touch the floor as he swivels around in his chair to greet a visitor. He started college at 8, but administrators were worried about his ability to keep up and only let him take two courses at first. He became a regular student after getting the top possible grade _ A-plus _ on both courses. BC-NA-FEA-GEN--US-College Genius. By John Rogers. AP Photos CADD201-208.

The economic squeeze is changing tourism this year, with Americans looking at closer, cheaper, domestic options. BC-NA-FEA-TRV--US-Tourism Downturn. By Brett Zongker. AP Photos NY455-463

CHICAGO: Capturing one city's rich architectural history

CHICAGO _ The boat glides under the Michigan Avenue bridge and heads into the heart of the city, as the shimmering white Wrigley Building and neo-Gothic Tribune Tower rise to the north. It passes the corncob-like Marina Towers, the sprawling Merchandise Mart and glass-and-steel skyscrapers _ a tapestry of new and old that draws architecture enthusiasts from around the world to the city that famed architect Daniel Burnham once called his "Paris on the Prairie." "I knew I was going to be coming to Chicago and the one thing that I wanted to do was the river cruise," said Kristen Moore, 35, of Phoenix, snapping photos on the tour, sponsored by the nonprofit Chicago Architecture Foundation.
