AP-AM Prep-Cyber Corner

(Canadian Press Broadcast Wire (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MORNINGPREP-MORNINGPREP-MORNINGPREP-MORNINGPREP ! CYBER CORNER ! IN THE NEWS: GOOGLE-MOTOROLA MOBILITY WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Google-Motorola deal isn't done yet, but it's a step closer. U.S. regulators have approved Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings. The Justice Department wrapped up a six-month review of the deal after concluding the arrangement won't stifle competition in the mobile device market. European regulators have reached the same conclusion. But, then there's China. The U.S. approval of the deal means Google can take control of Motorola Mobility -- if it can get government approvals in China, Taiwan and Israel. And China looms as the biggest stumbling block, given Google's shaky relationship with the government there. Google wants Motorola's more than 17,000 patents. They could be a key weapon in an intellectual arms race with Apple, Microsoft and other rivals to get more control over smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

IN THE NEWS: IRAN-INTERNET TEHRAN, Iran (AP) _ Many Iranian Web users say their access to foreign email services such as Gmail, Yahoo mail and Hotmail appears to have been restored after a four day outage. The semiofficial Mehr agency had said more than 30 million people in the country were affected by the outage. Authorities in Iran's national telecommunications company declined to comment, saying the outage had no connection to them. Iran has occasionally restricted the Internet since the turmoil that followed the 2009 presidential elections and blocked websites including Facebook, Twitter, Voice of America and the BBC Farsi service. Meanwhile, a senior Iranian military official claims the country's nuclear facilities are immune to cyber attack. He's quoted as saying Iran and its nuclear facilities have the technology and knowledge to deal with malicious software. He didn't say what's been done since 2010, when a virus known as Stuxnet disrupted controls of some nuclear centrifuges. Iran has reported other cyber attacks since, including an infection last April dubbed ``Stars.'' The official said Iran also fought a spy virus called ``Doku.''
