Anthony wins in Griswold
GRISWOLD, Nov 04, 2009 (The Day - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Democratic First Selectman Philip Anthony nailed down a second term Tuesday, picking up nearly 58 percent of the vote in a three-way race.
Unofficial returns showed Anthony garnered 1,249 votes to Republican Theresa Madonna's 508. Edward Berdick, a petitioning candidate, got 411 votes.
Democratic Selectman Steve Mikutel, a state representative, also was returned to office, gaining 1,288 votes in the selectman's race. Madonna, who outpolled the other two candidates for selectman, Republican Brian Baker and Roland Harris, a petitioning candidate, won the third seat on the Board of Selectmen.
Anthony said he was humbled by the overwhelming show of support, which he said gave him "a mandate to continue the work I've begun."
He said the town was "in a state of financial and moral chaos" when he took office two years ago. He said he also had to contend with a lawsuit a former town employee had filed against the town over her dismissal by Anthony's predecessor, Anne P. Hatfield.
Madonna, a member of the Board of Education, said she was "very pleased" with the voting's outcome and looked forward to serving with Anthony and Mikutel.
Two years into a four-year term on the school board, Madonna said she intends to serve as both a selectwoman and school board member. She said Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, in a written opinion, has OK'd such service provided Madonna recuses herself when potential conflicts arise.
In general, incumbents fared well in Tuesday's balloting, with three Board of Finance members -- Republican Peter Dorff and Democrats John Wolkowski and Steven Merchant -- winning re-election, as did school board members Stuart Norman, a Republican, and Kimberly Brunelle and Laurie Sorder, both Democrats.
About 30 percent of the town's 6,800 registered voters cast ballots.
