American Royal schedule

Sep 27, 2009 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- For the 110th year, American Royal time is here. Saturday's parade kicked off more than two months of agricultural and educational events. Next up is the annual downtown cattle drive, this year accompanied by a free outdoor concert. All other events take place at the American Royal Complex, 1701 American Royal Court in the West Bottoms. Thursday: Cattle Drive and free concert Honorary cowboys and cowgirls herd 40 head of cattle down Grand Boulevard to set the stage for the weekend barbecue. Country singer Lane Turner plays the Power & Light District's KC Live stage right after the drive. 4:45 p.m. from 10th Street to Truman Road. Free.

Friday-Saturday: 30th annual American Royal Barbecue More than 500 teams from three continents converge on what organizers tout as the World Series of Barbecue. Watch cookers in action, buy food from vendors and listen to live outdoor concerts. 3 p.m.-11 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday. Friday tickets are $13 for all ages. Saturday tickets are $13 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, free for children younger than 5.



Oct. 10: Equine Extravaganza Features performances by Charro Jerry Diaz and local riders, including the Royal Friesians, Mission Valley Hunt Club and the Carriage and Driving Society of Greater Kansas City. 7:30 p.m. at Hale Arena. Tickets $15 for adults, $9 for ages 5 to 12.

Oct. 9-11: Hunter/Jumper Preview Show A new, nonrated horse show enabling more local hunters and jumpers to compete before the following week's national show. Shows start at 8 a.m. daily at Hale Arena. Free.

Oct. 14-18: Hunter/Jumper Horse Show Some of the country's best jumping horses soar their way to thousands of dollars in prize money. Competitions begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 14 and 7:30 a.m. Oct. 15-18 at various facilities. Free admission. The $25,000 grand prix is 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Kemper Arena. Tickets are $10. The $30,000 Roy A. Edwards Jr. Memorial Grand Prix is 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Kemper Arena. Tickets are $20.

Oct. 15: Wine Competition & Auction Sommeliers judged entries in August for the Royal's inaugural wine competition. Attendees can taste and buy the grand champion and other wines at the Oct. 15 party. 5 p.m. at Wagstaff Theatre. Tickets are $75 and include admission to the Hunter/Jumper $25,000 Grand Prix at 7 p.m.

Oct. 19-24: Invitational Youth Rodeo Top student athletes from across the Midwest compete in traditional rodeo events from barrel racing to mutton bustin'. 11:30 a.m. daily at Kemper Arena. Cost is $5.

Oct. 23-24: Pro rodeo and concerts Professional cowboys and girls from across the country ride, rope and wrestle their way to nearly $150,000 in prize money. Country stars Pat Green (Oct. 23) and Sara Evans (Oct. 24) perform afterward. 7:30 p.m. each night at Kemper Arena. Concerts immediately follow. Tickets, good for the night's rodeo and concert, start at $15.

Oct. 24: Family Fun Day Events include a piglet birthing clinic, petting zoo, live entertainment and shopping at the Western Marketplace. All day $5, or free with a ticket to the day's youth or pro rodeo.

Oct. 22-25: Unbelievable Horse Happening Open horse show, demonstrations and trade show. All day, various facilities, $5, or free with ticket to same-day rodeo.

Oct. 27-Nov. 1: Livestock Show Cattle, lambs, goats and swine are shown and auctioned throughout the week, ending with the junior premium auction at 6 p.m. Nov. 1. Shows start at 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. daily at various facilities. Cost is $5.

Oct. 31: Chairman's Cowboy Days New this year, a chance for cowboys and girls (or rodeo hopefuls) to hear tricks of the trade at mini-clinics led by world-champion rodeoers, including cowboy Larry Mahan. 1 p.m. at Kemper Arena. Cost is $25.

Oct. 30 and Nov. 1: Championship Bull Riding Kansas City is the last stop on the 2009 Championship Bull Riding tour. Professional cowboys compete for the title of CBR world champion and the $100,000 bonus that comes with it. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and 2 p.m. Nov. 1 at Kemper Arena. Tickets start at $15.

Nov. 6-8: 4D Barrel Racing Bonanza The Royal's newest Western riding event, where hundreds of racers per day are expected to compete for the fastest time around three barrels. 11:30 a.m. Nov. 6-7 and 8:30 a.m. Nov. 8 at Hale Arena. Free.

Nov. 11-14: Cutting Horse Show Highly trained horses slide from side to side to separate a calf from the herd. There are free competitions each day, plus two ticketed events. Celebrity cutting is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Tickets are $12, or $100 for VIP dinner and show. Cutting horse finals are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14. Tickets are $12. Hale Arena.

Nov. 17-21: UPHA/American Royal National Championship The grand finale of the American Royal season. The United Professional Horsemen's Association national championships -- considered one prong in America's Triple Crown of saddlebred shows -- culminate with Stake Night on Nov. 21. Free shows daily at Kemper Arena. Ticketed shows are 6 p.m. Nov. 19, $10; 7 p.m. Nov. 20, $22; 11 a.m. Nov. 21, $10; and 7 p.m. Nov. 21, $22.
