ALWS board honors Holbrook [The Star, Shelby, N.C. :: ]

(Star (Shelby, NC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 15--Eddie Holbrook thought there was a sporting event at Shelby High on Monday.

But, instead, everyone was there to honor him.

The American Legion World Series board honored Holbrook, co-chairman of the ALWS executive committee, by naming the entrance to Veteran's Field at Keeter Stadium for Eddie Holbrook.

"When I got there and saw all the cars, I first thought there was a high school game going on," Holbrook said. "Then I saw people standing in the rain and thought it must be a very special occasion standing there and getting drenched." Five of the executive committee board started planning at the end of last series and had it all in place by October, said board member Rusty Patterson.

"We saw a number of items named across the ball park and nothing to recognize all the efforts of Eddie Holbrook," Patterson said. "None of this would have happened if it hadn't been for his vision or drive." Co-chairmen Jim Horn and Holbrook have spent more than a decade to make Cleveland County the permanent home of the series.

Holbrook went to the stadium under the pretense that he was meeting a friend and supporter who was making a contribution to the series.

"I was totally surprised, I don't know how that many people knew it and I didn't hear a single word of it," Holbrook said. "It was quite a surprise and somewhat overwhelming." Holbrook said it is a tribute to the county, community and the city.

"It was an emotional moment," Holbrook said. "All I can say is a gracious thank you to everyone who made it possible." ___ (c)2014 The Star (Shelby, N.C.) Visit The Star (Shelby, N.C.) at www.shelbystar.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
