Align Networks Hosts Physical Therapy Breakout and Presents Session on Predictive Analytics at 2016 Workers' Compensation Educational Conference

Advanced rehabilitation programs, the ability to measure an injured worker's functional capacity, and the strategic use of predictive analytics are all best practices that can provide new opportunities to improve outcomes in workers' compensation programs. Michelle Despres, PT, CEAS II, Vice President and National Product Leader at Align Networks, a division of One Call Care Management ("One Call") and the leading provider of workers' compensation physical medicine programs, recently shared her clinical insights around these topics at WCI's 2016 Workers' Compensation Educational Conference that took place in Orlando, Florida, from August 21st to 24th.

Despres exemplified the thought leadership of Align Networks in two significant WCI 2016 events-first, she moderated a dedicated, four-hour "Physical Therapy Breakout" on Monday, August 22, and second, she co-presented a separate session on predictive analytics on Tuesday, August 23.

"This year in the PT Breakout we tackled the critical challenges in optimizing rehabilitation for injured workers and improving return-to-work (RTW) results," said Despres. "We discussed advanced rehabilitation programs, such as work conditioning and work hardening, which strive to progressively increase the stamina, strength, and endurance, as well as the confidence of the injured workr. The goal is to create a mindset in injured employees that prepares them physically and mentally to return to full duty."

The Physical Therapy Breakout included these three sessions:

  • "May the Workforce Be with You, Current Trends in Advanced Rehabilitation" - a review of the latest guidelines for work conditioning and work hardening programs.
  • "Are Self-Reported Measures Valid for Determination of Function and Work Capacity" - a discussion of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to measure functionality and determine work capacity.
  • "How Do Functional Measures Impact and Drive Outcomes" - a panel in which members discussed how they utilized functional measurement tools to evaluate PT outcomes and enhance RTW results.

"With an increased emphasis on evidence-based medicine, we provided a comprehensive overview of today's functional measurement tools, and how these measures could guide treatment and interventions, as well as structure a goal-oriented rehabilitation program that leads to safe and successful RTW outcomes," added Despres.

The following day, Despres co-delivered a separate presentation, "Data to Delivery: Applying Predictive Analytics to Improve Outcomes in Workers' Compensation Claims," with S.F. "Skip" Bretchel, EVP and CIO at CCMSI.

"We provided an in-depth look at how predictive analytics have been applied to claims data to identify and address a program's riskiest areas," said Despres. "Armed with these insights, workers' compensation programs can use proactive interventions on their high-risk claims. For example, they can intervene early on complex injuries to better coordinate care, or they can proactively address the needs of claimants who have comorbid conditions, such as obesity or diabetes. They can also analyze broader claims trends to identify frequent and severe injuries that would benefit from safety and injury prevention programs. By implementing analytics along with risk control initiatives, programs can achieve a five to ten percent reduction in workers' compensation costs-which over time can represent significant savings."
