[July 02, 2009] 'Alcatel-Lucent, SFR deploy HSDPA with FTTU GPON backhaul' Tweet Jul 02, 2009 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) -- Alcatel-Lucent and French operator SFR have demonstrated a world first in Paris, an HSDPA mobile network using a fibre-to-the-user (FTTU) GPON backhauling solution. The advanced optical access solution allows SFR to benefit from very high bandwidth access, enabling new professional mobile usages such as connecting to a virtual office from a 3G handset. For the demonstration in Paris's 15th district, Alcatel deployed its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager FTTU system its 5520 Access Management System, and optical network terminals. SFR will use this backhaul solution to bypass the copper network it leases from France Telecom to connect its mobile base stations. SFR stated that the GPON network architecture will be deployed next year in the most traffic-intensive areas, or 350 sites across France. This includes 66 percent of base stations in Paris, 50 percent of those in Marseille and 50 percent in Lyon. SFR will also boost the speed of its mobile network from 7.2 Mbps to 14.4 Mbps in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks.
