Airvana Announces CDMA Femtocell Advancements

CHELMSFORD, Mass., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Airvana, Inc. , a leading provider of mobile broadband infrastructure products, today announced the achievement of several milestones in the company's development of CDMA femtocell technology. Femtocells are small cellular access points that leverage existing broadband connectivity to provide consumers with enhanced mobile voice, video and data services, especially in the home. In a recent report, ABI Research forecasts that 74 million femtocells will be shipped through 2012 (1).

Airvana is developing a femtocell that supports both 1xRTT and EV-DO services-an industry first-to ensure users have a consistent mobile experience for voice, video and data services whether they are connected through their femtocell or the macro network. Airvana's CDMA femtocells are currently in trials with mobile network operators and are expected to be commercially available in the second half of 2008.

In addition, Airvana has distinguished itself in the CDMA femtocell market through its ability to offer operators a complete access network infrastructure solution for femtocells. By providing operators with CDMA femtocells, its Femto Network Gateway service provided by the Universal Access Gateway (UAG), and the required configuration, monitoring and management software, Airvana delivers a complete solution that simplifies deployment for operators and accelerates time to market.

"Femtocells will extend the advantages of CDMA and EV-DO technology for potentially millions of users while creating new revenue streams for operators," said Sanjeev Verma, vice president of Business Development and co- founder of Airvana. "Our solution will help CDMA operators evolve toward fixed-mobile convergence offerings that scale in coverage and capacity."

Airvana's leadership in CDMA femtocell technology follows the company's success in delivering CDMA2000 1xEV-DO equipment for operators' macro networks worldwide. The company's award-winning CDMA core technology is deployed in 16 major operator networks.
