Affidavits describe Colleyville teacher's relationship with student

Apr 02, 2013 (Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Editor's note: This article contains explicit descriptions.

The father of a Colleyville Heritage High School student who suspected his son of having a sexual relationship with one of his teachers brought the relationship to an end after tracking his 16-year-old's smartphone using an iPhone tracking app.

The father found Cody Ray Dickson, at the time a choir teacher at the Colleyville school, sitting on a bench with his son behind the Church at the Cross, 3000 William D. Tate Ave. in Grapevine, according to arrest warrants obtained by the Star-Telegram on Monday.

Dickson was arrested March 20 and is expected to be charged with an improper relationship between an educator and a student and online solicitation of a minor. He was free Monday after posting $15,000 bail. Dickson could not be reached for comment.

In a different case, a counselor at the high school was indicted last week on a charge of improper relationship with a student. Kerry Jones, 50, who is also a Northwest school district trustee, is accused of having sexual encounters with a male student who was legally an adult at Jones' Trophy Club home. The school district put Jones on administrative leave Aug. 10. An arrest warrant for Jones had not been issued by Monday evening, a Trophy Club police spokesman said.

The Grapevine-Colleyville school district placed Dickson on leave March 15, and he resigned March 20.

The teenager and Dickson told the father that they were talking about songs for the choir, but a few hours later the teacher called the father and repeatedly apologized for the incident, according to the affidavit.

Grapevine police say Dickson was having an improper relationship with the student and soliciting a minor, according to messages recovered during a forensic examination of the son's phone.

In those messages, the two professed their love for each other; one conversation described a kiss the two shared; and the student sent Dickson several photos of his penis and buttocks, according to the affidavits.

The pet name "baby" was used in a couple of text messages, the affidavit stated.

The student told Grapevine detectives that he and Dickson texted each other for several months and that some of it was "sexting." With permission from the student's father, authorities examined the teen's phone and discovered those texts. The original photos and conversations with Dickson had been deleted, but they were recovered during forensic examination, according to the affidavits.

The teen admitted to investigators that he had taken nude pictures of himself and sent them to Dickson, but the student denied receiving nude photos of his teacher, according to the affidavits.

In an interview with detectives, however, Dickson said he had sent the student three to four nude photos of himself. The teacher also asked the teen to keep their relationship a secret, so he would not lose his job, the affidavit stated.

In that same interview with detectives, Dickson described the relationship. He said he cared for the 16-year-old more than other students.

Dickson admitted to "sexting" with the student, meaning that he would describe sexual acts being done to each other, according to the affidavits.

The student told detectives that he and Dickson had planned the meeting behind the Grapevine church to see each other, police said.

Detectives believe the relationship began in January and ended March 9, when the teen's father caught them behind the church.
