Affidavit describes Colleyville teacher's encounters with student

Apr 02, 2013 (Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The father of a Colleyville Heritage High School student, suspecting that his son was having a sexual relationship with one of his teachers, used an "iPhone Finder" application to track his 16-year-old's smart phone to a walking trail behind a Grapevine church last month, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram on Monday.

Riding his bicycle, the father found his son with Cody Ray Dickson, at the time a choir teacher at the Colleyville school, behind Church at the Cross at 3000 William D. Tate Ave. in Grapevine.

His son and Dickson were sitting on a bench and they told the father that they were talking about songs for the choir, the affidavit stated.

A few hours later, Dickson called the father, apologizing over and over, and he seemed nervous while he was on the phone, according to the report.

The father found the conversation odd because neither his son nor Dickson had indicated that they were doing anything wrong on the bench.

But Grapevine police say Dickson was having an improper relationship with the student and soliciting a minor.

The two professed their love for each other in text messages; one conversation described a kiss the two shared; and the student sent Dickson several photos of his penis and buttock, according to the affidavit.

The pet name "baby" was used to refer to one of them on a couple of text messages, the affidavit stated.

Dickson was arrested March 20, and he was free Monday after posting $15,000 bail.

He is expected to be charged with improper relationship between an educator and a student, and online solicitation of a minor. Dickson was assistant choir director at Colleyville Heritage High School.

The Grapevine-Colleyville school district placed Dickson on leave on March 15, and he later resigned on March 20.

Dickson could not be reached Monday.

The student told Grapevine detectives that he and Dickson texted each other for several months and that some of it was "sexting." With permission from the student's father, authorities examined the teen's smart phone and discovered those texts. The original photos and conversations with Dickson had been deleted, but they were recovered during forensic examination, according to the affidavit.

The teen admitted to investigators that he had taken nude pictures of himself and sent them to Dickson, but the student denied receiving nude photos of his former teacher, according to the affidavit. In an interview with detectives, Dickson said he had sent the student three to four nude photos of himself.

The ex-teacher also asked the teen to keep their relationship a secret, so he would not lose his job, the affidavit stated.

In that same interview with detectives, Dickson described the relationship. He said he cared for the 16-year-old more than with other students.

Dickson admitted to "sexting" with the student, meaning he would describe sexual acts being done to each other, according to the affidavit.

The student told detectives that he and Dickson had planned the meeting behind the Grapevine church to see each other, police said.

Detectives believe the relationship began in January and ended March 9 when the teen's father caught them behind the church.
