Abdula'al clinches under-16 trophy [Gulf Daily News (Bahrain)]

(Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MOHAMMED Abdula'al was crowned under-16 boys singles champion in the Ninth Zain Junior Open Tennis Championship 2011.

Abdula'al posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mert Ekici in the final match, held at the Bahrain Tennis Club courts in Juffair.

Ekici, who stunned second seed Abdulaziz Janahi in the semi-finals, was hoping to pull off another surprising victory to win his first-ever tennis competition.

The young Turkish, however, was unable to match the strength and experience of his opponent in the first set, before putting on a brave show in the second which he lost by a narrow margin.

Son of former national team captain and present coach Essam, Abdula'al was at peak form with powerful shots and stamina.

Meanwhile, the semi-finals of the under-18 boys singles also took place as top seeds Yousif Qaed and Khalid Al Mosawi recorded hard-fought victories and moved into the final.

Tournament's No 1 Qaed edged past Abdulrahman Janahi 7-6 (3), 6-3, while Al Mosawi battled past against Ayman Jaffar 7-6 (4), 6-2 in similar fashion to set up the title show down.

This final is scheduled for tomorrow, to be followed by the prize-distribution ceremony.

Being organised for the ninth successive time and sponsored by telecommunications company Zain Bahrain, the event features more than 100 juniors competing in seven different age categories' events.
