5th Installment of EcoRun Brings Us Home

AJAC 2016 EcoRun:  TorontoOttawa

Bringing Fuel Efficient Technologies to Your Community.

The EcoRun is an annual AJAC event that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles, which include pure electrics, plug-in and conventional hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains and highly-efficient gasoline options. The purpose of the EcoRun is to help inform consumers of these alternative options, as well as providing accurate road testing fuel economy numbers. There's no limit to the size of vehicle showcased, as they range from subcompacts to pickup trucks. These new vehicles are driven on real-world road conditions in order to fully test for fuel efficiency and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

TORONTO, May 30, 2016 /CNW/ - The fifth edition of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's EcoRun is set to get rolling in just a few weeks when more than two dozen AJAC members will hit the roads of Southern Ontario to showcase some of the most fuel-efficient and eco-friendly vehicles on the market today.

Starting in Toronto on June 2, the event will make stops at Evergreen Brickworks for its opening ceremonies before heading out to Oshawa, Cobourg, Belleville, Picton, Kingston and Brockville, concluding in Ottawa, at City Hall.

Each stop has been careflly chosen for its location, and the distance between each stop has been kept below 95 kilometers to accommodate the range on some of the electric vehicles. With an electric vehicle and some plug-in hybrids in our test fleet, the locations were chosen not only for its activities and scenery, but for access to charging infrastructure.

Here's a look at each stop along the route for Day 1, a distance of 273 kilometers over 5 legs:

Evergreen Brickworks: On the grounds of a former brick factory in Toronto, the Evergreen Brickworks is "a community environmental center that inspires and equips visitors to live, work and play more sustainably." What better place to kick off the 2016 AJAC EcoRun, than a place which is all about sustainable living.

Oshawa: At our lunch stop, we will be touring the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and its Automotive Centre of Excellence, which has a department that focuses on electric vehicle research and development.

Cobourg: We will explore the scenic waterfront area of Cobourg as our journalists are given free time before the final leg of the day.

Belleville: Our overnight stop, but not before we make a trip out to Picton for dinner & a movie.

Day 2, a distance of 278 kilometers over 4 legs:

Kingston: While our vehicles get charged up, our journalists will get to learn about how Canada's inmates were locked up at Canada's Penitentiary Museum.

Brockville: A lunch stop overlooking the water at The Mill lets our drivers recharge their batteries ahead of the final leg of the event.

Ottawa: Our closing ceremony at Ottawa City Hall wraps up the event, with drivers submitting their final fuel consumption numbers to event organizers. The winner of the coveted Green Jersey for most eco-friendly driver will be announced later that evening during our closing dinner.

The fifth edition of the 2016 AJAC EcoRun is made possible thanks to the help of our partners, Natural Resources Canada, the Canadian Fuels Association, Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), Michelin North America (Canada) Inc., the Smart Drive Challenge, Scout Environmental, EV ChargeHub and the Chemical Guys Canada Auto Detailing.
