About 51 percent of Japanese polled responded negatively to the idea of their country shouldering part of the cost of relocating U.S. Marines from Japan to Guam, according to a Kyodo News survey released Monday.

The support rate for the Cabinet of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, meanwhile, stayed almost flat at 50.4 percent, according to the survey.

Japan and the United States have discussed sharing the cost of the planned transfer of some 8,000 U.S. Marines stationed in Okinawa to Guam.
