40-foot Ferris wheel featured at barbecue cook-off on Saturday

Apr 23, 2009 (The News Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Festivities to kick off a weekend of barbecuing start today, at the Limestone Sheriff's Arena. A 40-foot Ferris wheel, at the arena on Alabama 99 at Elm Street, is the first sign of much fun leading up to the "Good Times! Good Deeds!" 4th Annual Best Buckin' Bar-B-Q on Saturday.

The Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned cook-off, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, will draw more than 75 cookers on professional and shade tree levels to compete for the title of Best Buckin' Bar-B-Q, said Ardmore Boys & Girls Club board member David Freeman.

"Trophies awarded are made by a local artist and are rumored to be the best looking on the circuit," Southern Crossroad Group spokeswoman, Diane Lehr said.

"Proceeds from this year's events at the arena, benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Alabama. The Southern Crossroads Group is grateful to Sheriff Mike Blakely for his help and cooperation with this annual event that serves to kick off the upcoming rodeo events in May that culminate with the Sheriff's Rodeo on May 15 and 16," she said.

The group hopes to beat last year's proceeds of $8,000, Freeman said.

The programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs provide safe places for kids to learn and grow after school. There are trained professionals at the Clubs that teach leadership skills, customer service skills, assist with homework help, and offer sports activities for kids.

The carnival runs tonight through Sunday and there are discount coupons with the ad in The News Courier, for the Saturday event. Hours are 5-10 p.m. tonight and Friday; 1-10 p.m. Saturday; and 1-6 p.m. Sunday. Rides are $1 Thursday night. Armbands are available for $10 on Friday, $8 on Saturday and $15 on Sunday. Armbands are buy-one-get-one-free on Sunday.

On Saturday, 93.3 The Wolf will send out a live remote from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the cook-off. There will be an opportunity to try all the best barbecue for $2 in The People's Choice Tent. The Club House Cafe will provide concessions.
