29 women, children killed in stampede in Karachi+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)ISLAMABAD, April 9_(Kyodo) _ At least 29 women and children were killed in a stampede at a women's religious gathering in Karachi on Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

They said the stampede occurred when women attending the religious congregation at the Faizan-e-Madina campus of the Islamic group Dawat-ul-Islami were dispersing.

Faizan-e-Madina is located in the busy area of Karachi and Dawat-ul-Islami holds a congregation exclusively for women every Sunday. The private TV station Geo TV quoted an eyewitness as saying that the stampede occurred when a five-year-old girl fell in the main door and her mother stopped to pick her up.



Hospital sources said the death toll was expected to rise.
