2 middle schools, charter high named 'distinguished'

Apr 03, 2009 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Three Stanislaus County schools were named 2009 California Distinguished Schools this week. Somerset and Ustach middle schools in north Modesto and Keyes to Learning Charter high school earned the honor.

Somerset was recognized for its math and reading classes aimed at helping at-risk students and for its use of technology to better engage students. Teachers in all academic areas lecture with wireless InterWrite Pads to click through PowerPoint slides and write on the slides. Students work in pairs on laptops.

Ustach earned kudos for the same teaching technology and improving a "culture of belonging" for parents, teachers and students.

The only high school in the county named a Distinguished School, Keyes to Learning Charter garnered honors for its high level of parent participation and students who take college courses. This was Keyes' first Distinguished School honor and the second for Somerset and Ustach.

This year, 261 of California's 2,400 middle and high schools made the cut. The state announced the schools Wednesday. The California Department of Education honors middle and high schools one year and elementaries the next.

The selection process required schools to provide an in-depth description of two "signature" practices that directly relate to the success of students, especially at-risk students. The practices must also be replicated by other schools. Information on the practices was gathered and analyzed during visits to the schools by independent educators earlier this year.
