14 Taliban killed in foiled police attack

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Police in Afghanistan say they killed 14 Taliban troops during an insurgent attack on police checkpoints in southern Zabul province.

Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Malakhail said no police were killed in Saturday's fight although a Taliban spokesman said insurgents killed seven and burned a police station.

The checkpoints in the province's Qalat district were set up to guard the main highway connecting Kandahar with Kabul, the BBC reports.

Malakhail said police defended the posts, about 60 miles northeast of Kandahar, from 30 Taliban fighters.

The latest in an escalating show of violence in Afghanistan comes a day after police killed 41 Taliban who were thought to have fled a neighboring province.
