Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa told local television Indosiar that the local train left the Gubug train station without permission from the stationmaster. The express train rear-ended the slow train, which was supposed to have stopped on another track, and four train cars plunged into a paddy field. Rescue workers have evacuated survivors and the dead from wreckage. The two trains, carrying hundreds of passengers, were heading from Jakarta to Surabaya, the country's second-largest city. The accident occurred a day after another train collision in North Sumatra province that killed two people. Train crashes are common in Indonesia due to poor management and inefficiency. |
