'Do Not Call' sign-up deadline is TuesdayINDIANAPOLIS, May 21, 2013 (The Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Tuesday is the deadline for Indiana residents who have not previously signed up to get their telephone numbers added to the state's newest "Do Not Call" list. Hoosiers who register their residential, cellular, VoIP or prepaid phones online at indianaconsumer.com or by calling (888) 834-9969 should see a reduction in unsolicited marketing calls. "Illegitimate businesses and scammers skirt the law by trying to deceive consumers with phony sales pitches. That's why if you are on the Do Not Call list and receive a sales call or text message you can count on it being a scam," said Attorney General Greg Zoeller. Since January, the attorney general's office has recorded more than 5,100 complaints from Hoosiers who received a telemarketing call from either a live operator or a prerecorded message. Zoeller said the top three "most annoying telemarketing calls" are offers by "cardholder services" to reduce credit card interest rates, "free" home security system installations and sweepstakes prizes that require the "winner" to send money to claim the prize. These calls all aim to separate consumers from their money or collect consumers' personal information, he said. Complaints about telemarketing fraud and Do Not Call list violations can be filed at indianaconsumer.com. ___ (c)2013 The Times (Munster, Ind.)
