(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20100614/CG20517LOGO) "We are excited to be offering this innovative wireless communications package to our global base of buyers. Consistent connectivity is the key to reliable and efficient wireless communication. Thus, the portfolio for sale offers a distinct advantage for telecommunications or network service providers wishing to ensure quality of service for users," says Dean Becker, CEO of ICAP Patent Brokerage.

Key Characteristics & BenefitsThe portfolio for sale includes a handoff management technique in Internet Protocol (IP) based mobile communication network. While a mobile device is roaming, it connects to different Access Points (APs) which may result in dropped or delayed connections. Therefore, it becomes difficult to maintain the quality of service or continuity of data for various real time applications such as VoIP, video over IP, or teleconferencing. Typically, handoff in IP networks can be managed by forwarding data packets from a fixed point in the network to the mobile device. However, this technique involves high handoff latency. While a good communication quality requires a handoff time of less than 50 milliseconds, the typical time for existing techniques runs into hundreds of milliseconds.

Utilizing this innovative technology, the connection signal strengths of various APs at the mobile device are compared to pre-determined levels for evaluating suitable APs for connection. The APs are then authenticated and their information added to an association table that is used to select an AP for connection with the mobile device. The authentication involves establishing a virtual connection with the AP having a pre-determined level of signal strength. Further, any AP having connection signal strength less than the pre-determined level is removed from the association table. Therefore, the latency during the handoff procedure is reduced, the quality of service is improved, and the real-time communication of IP based multimedia applications during handoff is guaranteed.
