BRIEF: Windstream glitch impacts local customers

SANFORD, Mar 16, 2012 (The Sanford Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A mishap during contract work in northern Lee County left roughly 35,000 Windstream customers in Sanford, Broadway and the Olivia area without the World Wide Web for hours Wednesday.

Company spokesman Scott Morris said a contractor was boring underground performing line work at around 5 p.m. Wednesday when he inadvertently cut a vital fiber line on Forestwood Park Road in northern Lee.

"The fiber took a turn and came up from its normal depth and he cut it," Morris said.

The mistake cut off Internet in Lee and parts of northern Harnett County from 5 p.m. Wednesday to around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Morris said Windstream customers should have had their web restored by Thursday morning, although it may be necessary to restart equipment first. Anyone with additional questions should contact Windstream's Internet help desk at 1-866-445-0978.
