Huawei Technologies to Build 100G Network for CERNET

Feb 23, 2012 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. has won a bid from China Education and Research Network (CERNET) to build 100G networks in big and medium cities in China with coherent optical technology.

The bid is concerned with the third phase of CERNET's Project 211. The goal of Project 211 is to upgrade the educational and research standards of China's high-level universities and key subjects. After established, the coverage areas of the 100G networks may become the largest in the world.

CERNET devotes itself to informatization construction of Chinese education, building and managing China's academic computer networks. The oncoming network will be adopted with the most advanced 100G coherent technology and OTN equipments and will cover all the big and medium cities in China. With an over 11400-kilometer transmission distance, the network will be able to lay a solid foundation for the development of China's educational networks in the coming 10 years.

In this project, the hybrid cable transmission of the new 100G-based business and the current 10G-based business will be realized. This will not have negative results to business on the system but will guarantee smooth capacity enlargement, effectively protect CERNET's investment in network and neutralize the great risk brought about by wide bandwidth.

Huawei Technologies ranked top in global optical network market, WDM/OTN market and 40G market by the third quarter of 2011, according to consultant firm Ovum.
