Oakdale students take part in video for Chicago museum

Dec 17, 2008 (The Pantagraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
NEW 3:30 p.m. NORMAL -- A 9-year-old Oakdale Elementary School student hopes to get to Chicago to see the video taped in her classroom.

"I was nervous," said Joke' (pronounced Jokay) Adanri of Normal, after repeating several lines that will be part of a video shown at the Museum of Science and Industry from Jan. 25 to March 1.

A three-person crew from The Iona Group Inc. of Morton filmed several students and the entire class. The Green Revolution exhibit explores green technology and features black architects, scientists and innovators.

"You are the next generation who has to think about the environment for the future," said Steve McNair, a partner in the Iona group.

He helped students learn their lines, admired the quality of their handwriting, and called them "the talent" -- a term they greeted with giggles.

McNair, of Normal, said the video will be at the exhibit entrance. The crew already has filmed Lawndale and Chicago students.

"If you are for some reason there with your family, you will be able to see yourselves," he said. The class also will get a DVD of the production.

It is unlikely the class will see the video as a group. "Unfortunately, they already had their field trip for the year," said fourth-grade teacher Tove Thomas, who beamed at her students throughout the taping.

The class was chosen in part because of its diversity: students are from the Congo, Ethiopia and France and Malaysia. Students from 16 countries attend the school.

"It's a great opportunity for our children," Thomas said of the video.
Students quietly worked on assignments as each of the selected half dozen learned, rehearsed and recorded their lines.

The first student to be filmed, Shereya Patil, 9, originally of India, was soft-spoken. "Use your playground voice," her teacher encouraged.

At the end of the filming, the entire class used their outdoor voices to shout "We're joining the green revolution!"
