FCC Approves Apple iPhone

TMCnet Contributing Editor

Apple Inc. has finally received approval from the Federal Communications Commission for its upcoming iPhone (News - Alert), whose launch remains on schedule.

"We're on track to release it in late June," said Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T Inc.'s Cingular (News - Alert), the cellular carrier with an exclusive contract to distribute the highly anticipated product. "Nothing has changed."

According to the news release, the iPhone combines a cell phone with Apple's iPod media player. The iPhone also comes with a touch-screen display. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs (News - Alert) unveiled iPhone in January and gave a preview of its features. Since then, it has caught the imagination of iPhone enthusiasts.

The FCC (News - Alert) approval has put to rest a false rumor of a product delay that has frightened investors. Apple shares has plunged by more than 4 percent

However, Apple shares went up by $2.10, or 2 percent, to $109.44 after a Bear Stearns analyst said the iPhone launch was on course.
