Thai-Fi Outfits Five-Star Hotels in Bangkok With New Ruckus MediaFlex Hotspot System

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Ruckus Wireless today announced that Thai-Fi, a leading wireless networking company in Thailand, has standardized on the new Ruckus MediaFlex Hotspot product (see related release) to enable "smart Wi-Fi" connectivity and support emerging multimedia services in several large, four-star hotels and serviced apartments in Bangkok. Thai-Fi has installed the MediaFlex HS throughout the Siri Sathorn, a 120-room, 19-story serviced residence, the Sukhothai, a 280-unit, four-story hotel complex and the Frasier Suites Urbana Sathorn, a 250-unit, 35-story residential building.

"The innovation happening with handheld devices and the expectation by users for a reliable Wi-Fi connection anywhere are driving profound changes in the hot spot market everywhere," said Carl Rubin, co-founder and business director of Thai-Fi.

After extensive testing, Thai-Fi selected the Ruckus MediaFlex HS to solve three primary problems: poor Wi-Fi coverage from thick concrete walls and metal construction, performance limitations caused by interference and the inability of current Wi-Fi products to support multimedia applications such as IP video and dense voice over Wi-Fi. According to Thai-Fi, new IP-based multimedia services such as IPTV being offered by Thailand's True Move and ADC's Buddy Broadband, as well as voice over Wi-Fi, are now coming to market in Thailand. These services, which can run over wireless networks, give hotels and apartments an alternative to more traditional voice, cable or satellite TV systems. However, the current state of Wi-Fi technology doesn't support the reliable transport of these delay-sensitive services.

"We were basically stuck with two choices -- featureless consumer products at the low end or expensive overkill enterprise systems at the high end," said Rubin. "There was this glaring gap for an affordable, yet feature-rich Wi-Fi system that could support demanding new applications and users. After testing a number of consumer and enterprise-grade systems it was clear that Ruckus Wireless had the only Wi-Fi system that could really fill this gap."

The MediaFlex HS is a multimedia Wi-Fi system specifically for hot spots and multi-unit building deployments.
