HP Virtual Solution to Abolish Desktop PC Environments

TMCnet Contributing Editor

In a bid to help companies do away with desktop environment management and decrease costs by reducing over-provision IT resources, HP has introduced an innovative solution called HP Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

VDI offers cost-effective desktop environment by combining physical desktop PCs into a single server that is centrally hosted and managed within the data center.

The solution includes HP hardware and management software with services and partner components, such as VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. According to a press release, the virtualization solutions helps organizations attain centralized manageability, competence and dependability through server-class hardware and virtualization software.

Furthermore, HP VDI goes well with other HP client virtualization offerings, including the HP Consolidated Client Infrastructure and Citrix solutions.

“HP is bringing advanced desktop virtualization capabilities into the reach of mainstream IT for cost-effective management of desktop environments,” said Nick van der Zweep, director, Virtualization, Technology Solutions (News - Alert) Group, HP, in the press release. “By pooling and sharing computing resources for desktop infrastructures, businesses can use computing resources that would otherwise be wasted.”

The resourcefulness of HP VDI lies in the fact that it supports virtual clients on a single HP ProLiant server or HP BladeSystem server blade and delivers a PC computing environment accessible with HP thin clients, desktops and notebooks.

The servers generally utilize existing network switches and wide area network (WAN) infrastructure and offer server-class high availability for data security and enhanced business continuity.

The HP Virtual Desktop Infrastructure comprises of HP Systems Insight Manager and ProLiant Essential tools as well to combine management of virtual and non-virtual machines.
