BroadLogic Intros TeraPIX Video Processor for Cable Operators

BroadLogic Network Technologies, a company that specializes in solutions for broadband networks, introduced Monday its new TeraPIX video processor, designed to help cable operators triple their digital spectrum.
The processor provides bandwidth sufficient to make the performance of multiple system operator (MSO) networks on par with fiber-to-the-home. The result is that operators can offer more and better services—HD channels, telephony, high-speed cable modem—without upgrading their networks.
BroadLogic claims that the BL80000 TeraPIX chip is the world’s first massively parallel, multi-channel video processor capable of decoding dozens of digital video streams and generating a full analog and digital service tier, including an 80-plus analog channel lineup.
“The BroadLogic TeraPIX video processor is the cable industry’s best path to tripling their digital bandwidth while sustaining the cable-ready competitive advantage they enjoy today,” said Danial Faizullabhoy, the company’s CEO.
The TeraPIX processing is being marketed as a tool to help the cable industry regain its position by making it easier to provide the type of bandwidth-intensive services (such as HDTV and triple-play packages) that consumers demand.
“MSOs, who have enjoyed a healthy competitive advantage as fiber inched its way to the home, face the competitive fight of their lives,” commented ABI Research analyst Mike Arden, in a statement.
Arden continued: “Growing demand for HD, VOD, Voice, and much higher-speed Internet will require conversion of much or all of today’s analog spectrum to digital sooner than later to remain competitive with telcos.”
The TeraPIX processor, BroadLogic said, was developed in consultation with network operators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and some of their suggestions were incorporated. For example, the processor allows MSOs to reclaim 450+ MHz spectrum without deploying set-top boxes.
According to a statement by Wayne Davis, former CTO of Charter Communications and currently a member of BroadLogic’s Technical Advisory Board, features such as that one address the migration process of MSOs to all-digital networks, in a consumer friendly and cost effective manner,
The BL80000 TeraPIX processor chip currently is available in sample quantities of up to 1,000 units at $300 per unit.
