Delightful Dish: Fish and chips at Gina's Cantina

Feb 14, 2013 (Las Cruces Sun-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- I know Las Cruces is not known for it's seafood and there are a limited amount of options here in that category. But despite that, there's still a few places out there that serve fish.

There's a fresh new place in the Downtown Mall and it's serving up a delicious basket of fish and chips just in time for Lent.

The Captain's Fish and Chips basket consists of six or seven pieces of fried fish -- I don't know how many pieces there were because I chowed down pretty quick. It's a breaded and deep-fried white fish that comes with a side of tarter sauce. It's delicious; crispy, hot and not too overwhelmingly fishy.

And the chips, or french fries, come in a rather large heap and almost spill out of the basket.

It's a pretty hearty meal and it's not the only seafood on the new menu. They have salmon and the ever-popular Ono Grindz garlic shrimp.

Did I tell you this place used to be Ono Grindz Yeah, they changed their name, look and menu last week to include a wide variety of foods including some Mexican favorites, breakfast, frybread tacos, burgers, pasta and they are keeping a few Hawaiian favorites.

They are hosting a Valentine's Day special dinner, so make your reservations now.

Gina's Cantina is located at 300 N. Main St. Their hours are from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Info: 575-541-7492 and "Gina's Cantina" on Facebook.
