The Fayetteville Observer, N.C., Live Wire column

Dec 27, 2012 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Q: Are there any cable companies besides Time Warner in our area -- M.W., Lumberton A: "In our area" is kind of nebulous. But we'll assume -- and reporters are taught in Journalism 101 never to do that -- that you mean Fayetteville and the 10-county spread that we call the Cape Fear region.

As far as cable, Time Warner Cable has a near monopoly in Cumberland County and much of the region. There is no cable competition in Fayetteville.

StarVision Inc. does provide service in Clinton, Roseboro, Salemburg, Garland, Tar Heel and other parts of Sampson and Bladen counties. Charter Communications operates in the Dunn, Lillington and Sanford areas.

As late as 2006, Adelphia Communications was a cable player in the outlying counties. Time Warner Cable and Comcast acquired most of Adelphia's revenue-generating assets in July 2006.

So, Time Warner Cable reigns as the dominant presence when it comes to cable providers in this neck of the woods.

Now if you're talking satellite or Internet television, other options are available.

Q: I saw in Cheers and Jeers where someone had a problem with a particular business and the business was named. Most times, though, the business is never named. Lots of people complain about restaurants and they're never named. How do you determine when you name a business -- J.T., Fayetteville A: We mention a business's name in our Cheers, but not our Jeers -- unless we choose a particular Jeer for staff writer Rodger Mullen to investigate with his "Rest of the Story" feature. Mullen also can choose to look deeper at a Cheers submission, but more often than not, he'll look at a Jeers entry in order to get comments from both parties about their respective sides to the story. Ultimately, it's his hope to help find some resolution for those involved, but it doesn't always happen that way. The "Rest of the Story" column is published every Sunday.

Q: Can you give me an email address for Ebony magazine The magazine lists [email protected] but emails sent there bounce back. I called their office and was told to try [email protected]. The email sent there also bounced back. -- M.R., Fayetteville A: Hmm. We can't explain why the inboxes at Ebony are full. But we went to the magazine's website and found a form where you can email your comment, critique or question. Go to ebony.com/contact-us. Hopefully your note won't bounce back this time.
