Free golf clinics for kids

Feb 22, 2012 (The Laurinburg Exchange - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Think, wish or hope you're raising the next Tiger? Then, Ted Robinson, the owner of Deercroft Golf Course in Wagram, wants to help nurture their inner talent by offering free clinics.

"It's all about the kids," said Robinson, as he plans for a summer series of week-long junior golf clinics for the kids of Scotland County. "Our goal is to expose the youth to the sport of golf and get them active," he said.

Robinson, a former professional golfer, said the clinics will be designed to teach the youth everything there is to know about golf.

"They will be instructed on how to play the game, what the rules are, and about the ethics of the game," he said.

Along with being taught the life lessons that can be learned from the sport, such as co-operation and the importance of teamwork, the students will also learn about chipping, putting, driving and form.

"I want the kids to associate golf with having fun and it will be another activity that gets them from in front of a computer," he said.

While the sport can be very expensive, Robinson said that the clinics will be free of charge.

"Again, it's all about the kids and providing them with an activity that could lead to a passion for the sport." Some of the student will also have the opportunity to gain summer employment at the golf course.

"We have expanded and upgraded the golf club and will be in need of summer help in several areas of operation," Robinson said.

The dates for the clinics will be determined as the weather becomes more conducive for the game and students are out of school. However, Robinson said that an after-school program could begin in early spring.

Currently, the clinics are designed for those ages 8 and up, but, depending on the faculty in place by the summer and interest, younger youth may be able to attend as well.
