Discuss the State of STIR/SHAKEN and its Challenges at ITEXPO 2025

Americans are bombarded with billions of robocalls every month; a totally relentless barrage that has become a pervasive annoyance in daily life, according to the Federal Communications Commission.




These unwanted calls, often peddling scams or surveys, exploit sophisticated technology that makes them cheap and easy to generate on a massive scale. Callers can even mask their true identity by "spoofing" caller ID information, which makes it difficult for recipients to discern the source of the intrusion.

The ubiquity of robocalls has not only been a nuisance, but has also led to financial losses for countless individuals who have fallen victim to scams. As technology continues to advance, it is likely that the problem of robocalls will only become more challenging to address.

This scourge of robocalls has prompted a multifaceted response from governments, telecom companies and technology developers. One key strategy involves technological advancements. Telecom providers implemented various techniques to identify and block robocalls, such as caller ID spoofing detection, call authentication and AI-powered spam filters. Additionally, there has been a push for standardized call blocking protocols to facilitate interoperability between different networks.

The government also plays a crucial role in combating robocalls. The FCC (News - Alert), for example, has imposed fines on robocallers and established rules to curb their activities. Another way the government is combating robocalls is through STIR/SHAKEN.

STIR/SHAKEN is a set of standards and protocols designed to verify the caller ID information of phone calls, which makes it more difficult for scammers to spoof their identity. 

No doubt it is a crucial tool, and there is a chance to learn where STIR/SHAKEN stands in the fight during an ITEXPO 2025 session titled "State of STIR/SHAKEN and Continuing Challenges," taking place from 3:00-3:45 PM on February 11, 2025, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The implementation of STIR/SHAKEN has the potential to reduce the prevalence of robocalls and other types of phone scams. By making it more difficult for scammers to spoof their caller ID, STIR/SHAKEN protects consumers from fraudulent activities and improve overall call quality.

The session will provide an update on the current state of STIR/SHAKEN implementation and adoption. The panelists and audience will also discuss the challenges that remain, including compliance issues, technical hurdles and the impact on legitimate businesses.
