T-Mobile Introduces '5G On Demand': Portable Private Network

By Stefania Viscusi October 14, 2024

T-Mobile (News - Alert) launched a new 5G solution “5G On Demand” that offers businesses a portable, private 5G network that simplifies setup, teardown, and management of high-bandwidth, low-latency networks.

The solution is designed to be easily deployed virtually anywhere and caters to industries like media, entertainment, construction, oil, and gas, and more. It will be commercially available by the end of 2024 and offers a flexible, cost-efficient alternative to permanent private networks.

“With 5G On Demand, T-Mobile is transforming how businesses and organizations implement 5G private networks, prioritizing cost-efficiency and simplicity,” said Mishka Dehghan, SVP, Strategy, Product and Solutions Engineering, T-Mobile Business Group. “We're making it easier than ever to set up powerful networks, empowering teams to focus on what they do best — delivering exceptional content and services without the complications of traditional infrastructure.”

The offering has already been used for high-profile productions like the PGA Championship and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Partnering with Sony, 5G On Demand powered ultra-low latency 5G connections for broadcast operations so Sony’s FX6 cameras could deliver broadcast-quality video with a near-zero glass-to-glass latency of under 100 milliseconds. The result was high-resolution (4K at 60 FPS) video transmission without the need for bulky fiber cables - an improvement from the traditional cellular networks that struggle with bandwidth limitations.

Key advantages of the new solution include:

  • Cost Reduction: By reducing reliance on fiber connections, 5G On Demand cuts infrastructure costs while still delivering the bandwidth required for data-heavy applications.
  • Efficiency: It supports remote production workflows, eliminating the need for extensive on-site personnel and equipment, thus minimizing logistical expenses.
  • Flexibility and Speed: With the ability to deploy rapidly on T-Mobile’s robust 5G network, industries can set up temporary networks for events, remote sites, or emergency operations without the cost and complexity of building a permanent network.
  • Improved Operations: The system enhances efficiency in capturing, transmitting, and producing media content while being versatile enough for use in various industries, from live sports broadcasting to construction site management.
