AI in Telecom: Dell's Technology Leads the Way

By Greg Tavarez October 02, 2024

AI still appears to be on track to change the telecommunications industry, with nearly half of telecom executives surveyed by MeriTalk and Dell predicting that AI will be "the most transformative technology in the next five years." As AI technologies continue to advance, they are expected to enable telecom companies to improve network performance, enhance customer experiences, and develop new products and services.

However, despite this recognition of AI's potential, a majority of telecom organizations – 68%, specifically – feel they struggle to keep up with the pace of technological change and the evolving needs of their customers.

With this disconnect, there is a need for telecom companies to invest in AI and develop strategies to harness its power to remain competitive in the face of increasing disruption.

In that vein, the recently announced Dell AI for Telecom program (part of the Dell AI Factory) will address these challenges by bringing together Dell's AI expertise, infrastructure and services with software and silicon from across the AI ecosystem.

Basically, what the program does is develop and deploy on-premises AI solutions that CSPs can use to enhance network performance, improve customer service, and provide greater value at the enterprise edge.

To get the most out of those AI solutions, Dell expanded its collaboration with NVIDIA (News - Alert). Combining Dell PowerEdge servers, NVIDIA GPUs and enterprise-grade AI software, these solutions will help CSPs enhance customer care, automate operations, optimize network performance and facilitate AI deployments at the network edge.

Key areas of focus include using AI to improve network maintenance with the Amdocs (News - Alert) amAIz platform, automate call center scripts with Iternal, conduct network troubleshooting with Kinetica SQL-GPT and develop digital twins for networks with Synthefy.

Additionally, Dell and NVIDIA are working together to enable CSPs to offer GPU-as-a-Service offerings, which provides on-demand GPU capacity to enterprise customers. This allows CSPs to generate new revenue streams and deliver carrier-grade AI inference and training closer to data. Dell Professional Services also provides support for CSPs throughout the AI solution lifecycle, from strategy to implementation and operation.

“With NVIDIA's AI suite, Dell is accelerating the adoption of AI factories, AI-powered operations and AI-RAN in telecom, as well as helping communications service providers apply these technologies to augment their own network operations and enhance customer experiences,” said Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President, Telecom, NVIDIA.

Dell is actively collaborating with CSPs to develop AI solutions that enhance customer experiences and improve network performance. Through its Dell Telecom Open Ecosystem Labs and partnerships with companies like Lintasarta and SK Telecom (News - Alert), Dell is providing AI infrastructure, including GPU-as-a-Service offerings and AI chat agents, to help CSPs leverage AI for their business needs.

"Capitalizing on the multiple opportunities presented by AI has become the most compelling driver of network cloud transformation," said Dennis Hoffman (News - Alert), Senior Vice President and General Manager, Telecom Systems Business, Dell. "Dell AI for Telecom brings together Dell's AI expertise and infrastructure, with partners across the ecosystem, to help network operators implement AI solutions in and on the network that reduce OPEX, improve performance and create new edge revenue opportunities."

Since 1999, ITEXPO (News - Alert) has combined educational conference programming with a robust exhibit hall, networking events, and other activities, bringing together buyers and providers of business technology products and services that drive business success.
