Happy Friday, readers.
Real quick, before everyone bounces into the weekend, let’s cover some news.
T-Mobile. NVIDIA. Ericsson. Nokia.
All of these organizations a.) have become exceptionally well-known names in several industries, each with expertise in modern technologies, and b.) have been featured in recent coverage across many of our news sites; here on Internet Telephony, GenAI Today, IoT Evolution World and others. The stories therein have included:
And now, following a joint announcement, these four have come together as part of a new collaboration.
What’s the goal?
“Drive the future of mobile networks with AI at the center” — specifically, via enhancements to radio access network (RAN) technology, which altogether leads to AI-RAN.
AI-RAN, for any unfamiliar, is poised to “dramatically improve customers’ real-world network experiences,” according to T-Mobile’s (News - Alert) official press release, “by leveraging billions of data points to devise algorithms that determine optimal network adjustments for maximum performance where customers need it most.” T-Mobile asserts that AI will not only power RAN performance, though; it’ll also “supercharge mobile network infrastructure to simultaneously run third-party AI application workloads at the network edge.”
Thus, with T-Mobile’s 5G leadership, the NVIDIA AI Aerial platform, and both Ericsson’s and Nokia’s (News - Alert) respective expertise in telecommunications, the four look to make all of this a sure-fire reality.
Also notably, this four-org consortium is going another extra mile; all are founding members of the AI-RAN Alliance and are investing in a new AI-RAN Innovation Center based in Bellevue, Washington.
In the words of Mike Sievert, T-Mobile’s CEO:
“Just as T-Mobile led the 5G revolution, we intend to lead in the next wave of network technology to benefit as many customers as possible. AI-RAN at T-Mobile will be all about unlocking the massive capacity and performance that customers increasingly demand from mobile networks. AI-RAN has tremendous potential to completely transform the future of mobile networks, but it will be difficult to get right. That’s why T-Mobile is jumping in now to help lead the way with our partners. This collaboration between T-Mobile, NVIDIA (News - Alert), Nokia and Ericsson will truly define what’s next in mobile networks in the 5G Advanced era and beyond, and drive real progress where it’s needed. This group of visionaries will work together at our new Bellevue AI-RAN Innovation Center, and the partnership will not only propel the mobile network industry forward; it will also has the potential to eventually advance many others as well.”
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, commented further.
“AI will reinvent the wireless communication network and industry — going beyond voice, data, and video to support a wide range of new applications like generative AI and robotics,” Huang explained. “NVIDIA AI Aerial is a platform that unifies communications, computing and AI. Working closely with the industry’s leaders, we will extend AI traffic to wireless networks and use AI to reinvent wireless communications.”
