New Microsoft 365 Outages Result in Users Disrupted, Losing Access to Key Services

By Alex Passett September 12, 2024

Earlier this morning, we noticed an uptick in headlines regarding new Microsoft (News - Alert) outages. Naturally, reports concerning this topic are, well, concerning — millions upon millions of individuals, businesses and entire global institutions rely on Microsoft products and services; Office, Teams and Azure, to name three of the most popular. Such disruptions have the serious potential to disrupt operations, which can lead to financial losses, as well as major hits to teams’ levels of productivity and their cross-platform communications. Outages can also pique ill interest from bad actors, who may find novel system vulnerabilities, exposing possible cybersecurity risks (both old and new).

Additionally, we took notice of this because it seems to be at least the third major outage for Microsoft in recent memory, according to outlets like The New York Post and CRN. On July 19 and July 30, respectively, Windows machines (due to the massively faulty CrowdStrike update) and then Microsoft 365/Azure services experienced responsiveness issues, with users unable to connect normally. (Not great, clearly.)

In terms of today’s news, here’s what we’ve got at this time:

After initially monitoring the outages, Downdetector reported that “more than 22,800 users of Microsoft 365 indicated they have had trouble accessing the service in the past 24 hours.” And though that number of users is thankfully declining, these radar blips of service degradation, so to speak, aren’t the best sign for users. (Though it doesn’t mean everyone is about to up and run from Microsoft, obviously; it’s much-needed services are woven into so many facets of near-countless critical infrastructures.)

Still, even semi-constantly unresponsive/unavailable services aren’t the best look.

"We're investigating an issue where users may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services," the company wrote on Twitter/X just a few hours ago.

They then followed up with another post, saying “We've confirmed that a change within a third-party ISP's managed-environment resulted in impact. The ISP has reverted the change and we're now seeing signs of recovery. Please look for MO888473 in the admin center for more details and further updates,” the company added.
