Lumen Technologies Secures $5B in New Business Amid AI-Driven Connectivity Demand

Lumen Technologies announced it secured $5 billion in new business - a milestone for the company and one it says is fueled by a surge in demand for connectivity driven thanks to artificial intelligence (AI).

AI is transforming business operations, and the demand for robust network infrastructure has never been higher.

As large companies across various industries scramble to secure fiber capacity, Lumen is positioning itself as a key player in meeting this critical need.

The company is responding by more than doubling its intercity network miles over the next five years, aiming to provide access to an extensive amount of installed dark fiber. The company has also entered into a strategic agreement with Corning (News - Alert), selecting it as the preferred partner for next-generation fiber-dense cable, which is essential for accommodating the increased data processing demands of AI.

Kate Johnson, president and CEO of Lumen Technologies said the immense opportunity this demand represents could lead to one of the largest internet expansions ever.

In addition to its infrastructure expansion, Lumen has established a new Custom Networks division. This division will manage a portfolio of Private Connectivity Fabric solutions, catering to hyperscalers and other large organizations. It will also offer customized network solutions, including dark fiber, custom fiber routes, and digital services that securely connect data centers, ensuring protection and support for AI-intensive workloads. Lumen may also provide network operation and maintenance as part of its services.
