ID Dataweb Releases New Dark Reading Playbook on Why MFA Alone Cannot Stop Modern Identity-Based AttacksNew playbook reveals critical identity security gaps and outlines a roadmap for continuous identity threat detection CENTREVILLE, Va., Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- ID Dataweb™, a recognized leader in identity threat detection and risk mitigation, today announced the availability of "When MFA Isn't Enough: A Playbook for Continuous Identity Threat Detection," a new playbook developed in collaboration with Dark Reading and produced by Studio by Informa TechTarget. The publication examines how attackers increasingly exploit legitimate credentials, authenticated sessions, and trusted business processes to circumvent traditional security controls. It also outlines practical steps organizations can take to continuously assess identity risk and mitigate identity-based attacks throughout the identity lifecycle.
As organizations invest in stronger authentication, including phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), cybercriminals are adapting their tactics. Recent breaches attributed to ShinyHunters, involving organizations such as the University of Nottingham, DentaQuest, 7-Eleven, Medtronic, and Wynn Resorts, illustrate how attackers increasingly rely on stolen credentials, social engineering, compromised access tokens, and trusted application integrations rather than exploiting traditional network vulnerabilities. These attacks expose a fundamental weakness in conventional identity security strategies: A successful authentication establishes trust at a specific moment, but it does not guarantee that the person behind the identity is legitimate or that subsequent activity remains trustworthy. "MFA remains an essential security control, but it was never designed to continuously establish the legitimacy of an identity or detect threats after authentication," said Dr. Torsten George, Chief Cybersecurity Evangelist at ID Dataweb. "Attackers have learned to exploit that distinction by hijacking authenticated sessions, manipulating account recovery processes, and abusing legitimate access. Organizations need to move beyond treating authentication as the final security checkpoint and continuously evaluate identity risk throughout the entire lifecycle." Seven Critical Considerations for Modern Identity Security
The playbook also challenges the assumption that stronger identity security necessarily creates additional friction for legitimate users. According to ID Dataweb, a large global insurer leveraging continuous, risk-based identity security across more than 100 customer-facing applications evaluated over 14 million digital interactions during a six-month period. Approximately 10% of those interactions exhibited suspicious activity, while velocity controls identified up to 2% of logins as automated bot attempts. Despite these threats, legitimate-user pass rates remained between 93% and 98%. The example demonstrates how correlating identity risk signals and applying adaptive verification can help organizations identify suspicious activity while preserving seamless experiences for legitimate users. "Security teams have traditionally been forced to choose between imposing more friction on every user or accepting greater exposure to identity-based attacks," added Dr. George. "Continuous identity threat detection changes that equation. By evaluating risk signals in context and applying stronger verification only when warranted, organizations can improve protection without compromising the user experience." Building a Roadmap Toward Continuous Identity Threat Detection The publication also addresses the emerging challenge of autonomous AI agents, emphasizing the importance of assigning unique identities, enforcing least-privilege access, establishing human accountability, and monitoring behavior for unexpected changes. For CISOs, IAM leaders, and security architects, the central recommendation is to build on existing identity infrastructure rather than replace it. By correlating identity intelligence across customer, workforce, and third-party environments, organizations can make more informed trust decisions, strengthen defenses against identity-based attacks, and maximize the value of their existing security investments.
