New program to grow the Yukon's forestry and bioenergy sector

CanNor is providing up to $546,945 over three years to strengthen the capacity, sustainability, and competitiveness of Yukon's forestry sector.

WHITEHORSE, YT, Oct. 21, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Yukon's forestry sector supports local jobs and supplies timber, biomass and other wood products. New territory-wide support is helping cultivate the sector by building capacity and opening new opportunities for Yukon products.

Today, on the first day of the 2026 Yukon Forestry & Bioenergy Conference – Rooted In Yukon. Building Our Future, the Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Minister responsible for CanNor, announced a contribution of up to $546,945 to the Yukon Wood Products Association. This funding, delivered through CanNor, is for a three-year project to support Yukon forestry businesses and First Nations by improving access to timber, advancing regulatory readiness, modernizing operations, and improving local biomass opportunities. This includes industry-wide learning activities, such as conferences and the new Leadership, Education and Advancement in Forestry (LEAF) program. The LEAF program will provide training and other support services for key technical and regulatory activities such as developing timber harvesting plans.

By investing in sector-wide capacity development through projects like this, the Government of Canada supports a strong and diversified Yukon economy.
