Resurety and Akamai Make Clean Energy History With First-Ever Exchange-Executed VPPABoston-area based cybersecurity and cloud computing company Akamai Technologies completed the first-ever clean energy transaction executed on a CFTC-registered exchange by securing a new high-impact solar Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) on August 31, 2026 on Resurety's CleanTrade marketplace. This milestone reinforces Akamai's commitment to its 2030 goal of reaching net-zero emissions across its global platform and operations. Resurety's CleanTrade platform is the first and only marketplace registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for transacting clean energy on an as-produced basis. Resurety, also Boston-based, provides market intelligence, portfolio software, consulting, and a regulated marketplace to empower clean energy buyers, sellers, and investors. This VPPA transaction marks a turning point in how corporate clean energy is bought and sold, proving that clean energy procurement does not need to be a slow, opaque process:
Historically, purchasing clean energy without a centralized exchange meant navigating a slow RFP process, disconnected spreadsheets, lengthy email chains, and drawn-out negotiations. Limited to proposals within a buyer's immediate network, companies also had no reliable way to verify fair, competitive market pricing. Furthermore, traditional annual volumetric matching often masked true grid carbon impact. Through this transaction, Akamai is operationalizing its consequential procurement philosophy - moving past check-the-box accounting to prioritize emissionality, investing where new clean power displaces the highest amount of carbon on the grid. Akamai selected an Indiana-based solar project for its high carbon abatement potential relative to the local grid. The almost 200MW project is expected to generate over 400,000 MWh annually. Because Indiana's grid relies more heavily on fossil fuels, every MWh of clean energy produced there displaces approximately 540 kg of CO2 per MWh. By contrast, projects in regions with higher renewable penetration, such as Texas (ERCOT), displace around 350 kg of CO2 per MWh. CleanTrade's regulated, digital marketplace evolves clean energy procurement into a transparent, real-time market that is accessible to all qualified buyers. As Resurety's Co-Founder and CEO Lee Taylor puts it, "For too long, the complexity and opacity of clean energy procurement kept transaction costs high and left high-impact VPPAs out of reach for all but the largest clean energy buyers. CleanTrade changes that dynamic completely. By bringing market transparency, standardized terms and underwriting, and compliance confidence through an exchange environment, we're removing common friction points and empowering corporate buyers of every scale to execute deals quickly, deploy capital efficiently, and drive real decarbonization." "We're on a mission to reach net-zero and power Akamai's global platform with 100% renewable energy by 2030, and we are determined to do it by putting truly clean energy onto the grid. Resurety's CleanTrade gave us the transparency and speed we needed to close the fastest VPPA in our history. This is about moving past promises and taking the kind of urgent, consequential action our planet needs right now," stresses Mattera. With Akamai set to leverage CleanTrade for additional VPPA transactions, the future of energy procurement is here. Together, the two Boston-area companies are empowering buyers to invest in clean energy, work toward their impact goals, and accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon future.
