73% of U.S. Professionals Say Administrative Work Makes Them Miserable, New 8am Research Finds8am™, the professional business platform purpose-built for the needs of legal, accounting, and client-focused professionals, today released its 2026 Admin Misery Index. The cross-industry survey of 1,200 U.S. professionals examines how administrative work - tasks like time tracking, invoicing, and compliance paperwork - affects overall employee wellbeing, workplace productivity, and expectations around AI. Key findings from 8am's Admin Misery Index
The findings come as AI use at work continues to grow. Gallup daa from Q1 2026 found that half of U.S. employees use AI at work, and 65% view its impact on productivity positively. "The Admin Misery Index shows how this administrative burden affects professionals' time, focus, and well-being. Addressing these pain points doesn't just improve business efficiency, it removes a source of daily frustration that drags professionals down at work and at home." Legal industry insights The legal industry carries significant administrative overhead, from timekeeping and billing to client communications, compliance, and payment collection. To examine how that burden affects firms, 8am fielded a separate companion survey of 400 U.S. legal professionals. The survey illuminated the impact that hours lost to administrative work have on law firms:
Among legal professionals, time-tracking is both the leading administrative stressor (44%) and the top administrative task respondents want AI to help reduce or eliminate (42%). The other top admin tasks for which legal professionals are seeking increased AI support to mitigate are:
