athenahealth's AI-native athenaOne® experiences now available to 170,000 clinicians


athenahealth today announced the broad availability of new AI capabilities across the athenaOne network, extending AI-native experiences to more than 170,000 physicians and other clinicians. As athenahealth advances its AI-native electronic health record (EHR) capabilities, these new innovations are streamlining clinical workflows and helping clinicians spend more time caring for patients.

The AI-native clinical encounter is now available to all clinicians on the athenahealth network, built directly into athenaOne. This AI-powered experience transforms the patient encounter into a unified experience that anticipates clinician needs, surfaces relevant insights, and recommends next steps in real time.

At the center of the AI-native encounter is athenaAmbient, athenahealth's ambient documentation solution. Built natively into athenaOne at no additional cost, athenaAmbient captures patient conversations and generates draft notes, potential diagnoses, and recommended order types across desktop and mobile workflows. It also provides guidance during the visit to support complete documentation and help identify care gaps.

The new AI capabilities in athenaOne are already helping to reduce administrative work and giving clinicians more time to focus on patient care. Since rolling out in late 2025, results show nearly six fewer minutes spent on chart preparation and documentation per patient encounter, which adds up to more than two workdays per clinician saved each month. Additionally, among early adopters, AI-native athenaOne has increased same-day chart completion by up to 30 percent, helping clinicians stay current with documentation and reduce chart backlogs.

"These AI capabilities are helping me spend less time on documentation and more time fully present with my patients. I'm able to walk into the exam room with the right context, stay engaged with the patient in front of me, and complete more of my charts the same day," said Dr. Lynn Joffe, owner of DTC Family Medicine in Colorado. T support the rapid pace of AI innovation across athenaOne, athenahealth has introduced the EHR AI CoLab, a co-innovation forum within athenaInstitute, athenahealth's research and intelligence hub. Made up of nearly 20 clinicians and EHR superusers, the CoLab brings end user feedback into the evaluation, testing, and refinement of new AI capabilities, so they are grounded in real-world practice and deliver meaningful value in the clinical workflow.

This customer-led collaboration extends beyond the CoLab, with thousands of clinicians participating in alpha and beta testing across the athenaOne platform, and more than 70 user groups helping shape capabilities that work in everyday practice. Together, these efforts help ensure athenahealth's AI tools solve real clinical challenges and fit naturally into existing workflows.


Beyond our current AI capabilities, additional innovations shaped by customer feedback and the EHR AI CoLab are now being tested with participating athenaOne practices. These capabilities support clinicians throughout the full care journey and include:

  • Problem-based summaries, now in alpha testing, gives clinicians quick access to the most relevant patient information, helping reduce clicks and decrease the cognitive burden of reviewing diagnoses.

  • Timeline view, now in alpha testing, automatically filters and organizes key chart information, making it easier to find and review the details that matter most.

  • AI-native clinical inbox, soon to enter alpha testing, is an intelligent inbox experience that surfaces insights and recommends next steps to help clinicians manage open tasks more efficiently and reduce administrative work.

  • Value-based care analytics assistant, now in alpha testing, is an AI-powered analytics experience that helps organizations track quality measure performance, identify patient populations, and surface recommended next steps to improve outcomes.
