RiskProNet International Executive Director Gary Normington Passes AwayGary Normington, 71, executive director of RiskProNet International, passed away suddenly of natural causes on Aug. 19 at his home in Menlo Park, Calif. Mr. Normington had been executive director of RiskProNet, an association of leading independent insurance agencies throughout North America, for more than 20 years. More than a third of RiskProNet's members are routinely included on the Business Insurance list of the 100 largest brokers of U.S. insurance. Mr. Normington had spent his whole life in insurance, starting in the mailroom of an insurance agency when he was in high school in Sacramento. He graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 1974, and went to work for Industrial Indemnity the following year. He started as an underwriting trainee and soon became a commercial package underwriter. "Gary's dedication and attention to detail were instrumental to the growth and success of RiskProNet," said Timothy J. Brady, chairman of the board of RiskProNet and senior vice president of Brady, Chapman, Holland & Associates, Inc., in Houston, Texas. "He was alays looking to see what he could do to make our association better, whether it was finding an outstanding speaker for our meetings or updating the website. He was a caring person and a good friend to all of us. Our heart goes out to his family." Prior to joining RiskProNet, Mr. Normington was president & CEO of the Pacific Network Group (PNG), a California association of insurance agents and brokers. He was vice president, underwriting and field operations for Sequoia Insurance Company, the US subsidiary of QBE International, where he worked from 1991 to 1995. From 1982 to 1991 he held executive leadership positions with Cigna Insurance Company. He also served five years in the U.S. Marine Reserve. In private life, Mr. Normington was an avid musician, playing the guitar, bass guitar, piano and trombone. He performed in a small rock band on weekends in his younger years He and his wife, Kathi, were high school sweethearts who met playing in the high school band. They moved to Menlo Park in 1991, where they raised their two children. In addition to loving music, he spent his spare time reading - preferably something history-related, watching movies and enjoying time with friends and family. It was in keeping with his sense of humor that his family gave him a baseball cap reading "Vintage 1949" for his recent birthday. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Matt (wife, Victoria Bi), who lives in Menlo Park; a daughter, Lisa Austin (husband, Christopher Austin) of Half Moon Bay; two grandchildren, Miles Normington and Sadie Austin; and two brothers, Arthur Normington (wife, Jackie Normington) of Carson City, Nev., and Kevin Normington (wife, Sherita Normington) of Sacramento.
