Pupils urged to follow their dreams [Grimsby Telegraph (UK)](Grimsby Telegraph (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DARE to be different - that was the message to pupils at a Grimsby school by a gold medal-winning gymnast who urged them to have the confidence to follow their dreams. Speaking at Havelock Academy's presentation night, two times Commonwealth gold medallist Craig Heap described how he had overcome the taunts of his classmates - and his own doubts - to forge a successful career in the sport. And he told pupils and their parents that life is too short not to do what you want to. Craig, who also addressed students prior to the awards ceremony, added: These young people have a really exciting journey ahead of them. If they make the right decisions and grab the opportunities they will go on and do some really cool things. Wendy Marshall, chief executive officer of the David Ross Education Trust, which runs the academy, encouraged pupils to make the most of their time at Havelock. Experience as much as you can. You don't know what you are good at and what your talent is until you have found that talent. Praising the school's continued improvements in exam performances, she added: Every time I come back to Havelock I'm very proud of all the students and their academic achievements, and the bar continues to rise on that. Principal Nigel Whittle said that since taking over ten months ago he had been continually impressed by the dedication, pursuit of excellence and talent of the students. Among the various prizes handed out during the evening were the awards for student of the year, recognising those who have taken a good all round approach to academy life. The male prize went to Jack Blyth, 18, who is now in the final year of sixth form and planning to go to university next year. He said: It is a privilege to be one of the two chosen out of the thousand talented students at Havelock. It is an absolute honour to be recognised. I have done fairly well academically and the won the regional under-19 table tennis competition for the school. I have also helped out the school by doing interviews to the media. Provided the opportunity I always like to give something back. Jack, who has ambitions of being a PE teacher, added: It has been an honour to be a student here and I think it is improving all the time. The opportunities that are on offer are amazing. I have played table tennis in front of Lord Coe and dined with Lawrence Dallaglio, who visited recently, and Craig Heap. All these talented sports people have come here and inspired all the students. The award for female student of the year went to Lucy Walker, 16, who is now at Caistor Grammar sixth form. Aspiring TV presenter Lucy said: I'm very proud that out of all the students at Havelock they felt that I was one of the two deserving of this award. It's good to be back here to see everyone. I have got some great memories of my time here. I broke a school sports day record and the chance to meet Kate Middleton has got to be a highlight. Athlete of the year was Year 11 pupil Jake Wren, 15, who has competed for the school in football, rugby and athletics. He said: I'm very proud. You get a lot of opportunities to take part in sport here. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do in the future but it would be something involving sport. ?
