Paul Herzog to retire as hospital's chief executive officer [Las Cruces Sun-News, N.M.]

(Las Cruces Sun-News (NM) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 28--LAS CRUCES -- Paul Herzog, chief executive officer at Memorial Medical Center, will retire Oct. 31.

"It has been my honor and privilege to work with the most dedicated and talented group of physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers and board of trustees in my career," Herzog said. "The MMC team is made up of truly outstanding health-care professionals that come to work every day and provide the best possible care to our community." Dr. William Einig, chairman of the MMC trustees, said Herzog's leadership of the city's and Dona County's public hospital has been strong. Herzog has been MMC's top administrator the past nine years.

"As CEO of Memorial Medical Center, he has succeeded beyond expectations in raising the standards of medical care available in this community," said Einig, of Herzog. "I feel that the key to Paul's success has been his open and fair method of dealing with people and issues, and his obvious care and respect for all those that help to make this hospital function. I wish him equal success in enjoying his well earned retirement." City Manager Robert Garza agreed that Herzog has been a top-notch hospital administrator.

"He's been the best chief executive officer we've seen the health care arena, maybe ever," said Garza, who also serves as an ex-officio hospital board member. "Paul has had a knack of bridging the gap between the technical aspects of health care, the doctors, and the public. We will definitely miss him.

A national search has begun to find Herzog's successor. An interim chief executive officer will soon be named to assume the leadership position and work with Herzog to ensure a smooth transition.
