First Japanese Litium-ion Battery to be Supplied to Large Sized Battery Energy Storage System on a Commercial Scale in Chile

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GS Yuasa International Ltd.

Mitsubishi Corporation GS Yuasa International Ltd. (President : Makoto Yoda, Office : Kyoto, Japan) and Mitsubishi Corporation (President : Ken Kobayashi, Office : Tokyo, Japan) are pleased to announce that their lithium-ion battery equipment with a maximum output of 20MW/6.3MWh was selected for a battery energy storage system which will be installed next to the new thermal power plant*1 to be constructed in Mejillones, Chile.

Mitsubishi Corporation will supply lithium-ion battery equipment to Parker Hannifin Corporation (Chaiman, CEO & President : Donald E Washkewicz, Office : Ohio, US) that is manufactured by GS Yuasa and contains battery cells manufactured by Lithium Energy Japan (President : Nobuyuki Ueoka, Office : Shiga, Japan), a joint venture between GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi Corporation. Parker Hannifin's global Energy Grid Tie Division located in Charlotte, USA will be integrating the complete turnkey energy storage system. Should Cochrane give the order to proceed, the lithium ion battery equipment will be installed in ten 40ft containers prior to the startup of the thermal power plant in Feb. 2016.

*1 The coal plant (472MW net / 532MW gross) located in Mejillones in Chile's northern region, Antofagasta, Region II. will be jointly developed by AES Gener (President : Luis Felipe Ceron C., Office : Santiago, Chile), the second largest power producer in Chile, and Mitsubishi Corporation.

This is the first case for a Japanese lithium ion battery manufacturer to be selected for a large sized battery energy storage system. GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi Corporation expect the market for such large sized battery energy storage systems to grow rapidly along with the demand for spinning reserve and power supply stabilization as the ratio of renewable energy increases. GS Yuasa, with its high technology based on the long term experience in developing lithium-ion battery, and Mitsubishi Corporation, with its knowledge and network of power generating business including renewable energy, will continue contributing to the World's shift towards clean energy.
