BRIEF: AT&T upgrades high-speed 'LTE' wireless service in the Portland area

Nov 21, 2012 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AT&T says it has expanded its high-speed, LTE ("Long Term Evolution") wireless service in the Portland area -- two months after it introduced the service.

The company says it's upgraded cell sites in Beaverton, Milwaukie, Portland, Tigard, Tualatin and in Ridgefield, Wash., to handle the "4G" speeds.

LTE offers Internet connections several times faster than AT&T's old "3G" network, but callers need phones equipped for the new technology, such as the new iPhone 5.

Earlier this month, AT&T added LTE service in Corvallis and Eugene.

Verizon brought LTE service to the Portland area last year. Sprint has its own LTE network, but hasn't announced plans to offer the faster connections in Portland.
