Lubuva New NEC ChairmanDar es Salaam, Dec 23, 2011 (The Citizen/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Justice (rtd) Damian Lubuva has been appointed the new chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Tanzania (NEC), the directorate of presidential communications, announced yesterday. According to the statement signed by the Chief Secretary, Mr Philemon Luhanjo, President Jakaya Kikwete has appointed Mr Lubuva, a retired Judge of the Court of Appeal to fill in the position left vacant by retired Judge Lewis Makame whose tenure in the public service ended in July this year. After retirement from the bench, Justice Lubuva was appointed chairman of the Tanzania Ethics Tribunal. Also appointed are Judge (rtd) Hamid Mahmoud Hamid to become vice chairman of NEC, while Mr Julius Benedicto Mallaba will be the director of election. The statement shows that the tenure of the appointees are to be key component in the country's electoral system starting December 19, 2011. Prior to this appointment, Mr Hamid was Judge of the High Court of Zanzibar. To NEC, he replaces Judge Omar Makungu who is now the Chief Justice and Attorney General of Zanzibar. |
