BRIEF: College plans geek fest, robot competition SaturdayOct 11, 2011 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Western Technical College is having its first T-Robo competition and all day free Geek Fest Saturday. Ten area high schools are busy engineering and programming robots to autonomously and remotely traverse an obstacle course. The event has been designed to encourage learning in the areas of math, science, engineering, and technology, and to showcase local youths' talents. "This is a fantastic opportunity for Socorro ISD students to experience real world applications of science, technology, engineering and design," said Andrew Werner, Socorro ISD science facilitator. "This type of sports-like competition brings real world applications to learning while fostering skills such as planning, teamwork and fun." This fest includes displays from the Fort Bliss Avenger Unit, Fort Bliss Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, El Paso Bomb Squad, and remote controlled helicopters. The event is from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Branch Campus, 9451 Diana. A suggested donation of a canned food item to benefit the West Texas Food Bank.
